Outdoor Activities

Canoeing

Our Canoeing takes place on local rivers and in our indoor heated pool.

Climbing

We have a 12m high Enterprise climbing wall in the school. This is used on weekly basis by the pupils. In addition to this we run Wednesday afternoon and weekend trips to local climbing venues such as Swanage, Portland, Dewerstone and various Dartmoor Tors.

Caving

We are fortunate to be at the foot of the Mendip hills, one of the major caving regions of the UK. Caving is available as an activity to pupils in the senior half of the school. We are fully equipped and use a range of caves including: Goatchurch Cavern, Sidcot’s Swallet, Rod’s Pot and Swildon’s Hole.

Dinghy Sailing

This is offered to Year 7 and Year 8 pupils between Easter and Autumn half term, on a Wednesday afternoons. We use the facilities of Durleigh Sailing Club at Durleigh Reservoir, Bridgwater. Safety boat and RYA Senior Instructor are provided by Somerset Youth and Community Sailing Association.

Pupils use TOPPERS, PICOS and WAYFARERS and are able to follow the RYA Young Sailors Scheme. The long term plan is for Millfield to have its own purpose built lake adjacent to the Preparatory School site, which will be an exciting and useful development.

Expedition Work

Regular Camping trips and day walks are held on The Quantock Hills and Dartmoor. Searching for Dartmoor ‘letter boxes’ is a popular activity.

Snorkelling/Sub-Aqua

In conjunction with a local PADI dive school we run courses leading to the Junior Open Water Diver qualification for pupils in Year Eight. The training starts in our pool and then progresses to the dive school, JEM DIVERS, 4m deep pool. The required open water dives take place off the Dorset or Devon coasts as weather dictates. Once pupils are qualified they have the opportunity to join Sunday diving trips during the Summer Term.
