Pastoral Care

Millfield has all the advantages of a large school but it retains the caring atmosphere of a small one. We make every effort to ensure that children never feel lost or bewildered and that they quickly find their feet and are given a sense of belonging. Each child has several adults particularly concerned with his or her interests: Group Tutor, Head of Year and Houseparents.

Meals

All meals are taken in the School Dining Hall. Our catering manager ensures that meals are well balanced and nourishing and the School recently won the Heartbeat Award for healthy eating. There is always a choice of several hot dishes, a vegetarian option and a full salad bar.

“My experience of school meals wasn’t too good, so the food here came as a pleasant surprise! And you can sit where you like and talk to your friends. Mealtimes are something to look forward to!” Luisa – Former Pupil

“It’s miles better – there’s lots of choice and it’s good for vegetarians. The Dining Room is bright and cheerful, too!” Jo – Former Pupil

House Life

There are three boarding houses for boys and two for girls. Each house is run by a married couple who have children of their own and they create a warm and relaxed family atmosphere for the pupils in their care.

As well as houseparents, all houses have a resident assistant as well as a string of support staff. A member of the school staff is appointed to each house to act as liaison tutor and he or she will spend an evening a week there.

“Boarding is a very important aspect of school life. We spend around two thirds of a year in school. I joined the school nearly four years ago from Hong Kong. I was a bit scared and at first homesick but there was no need to feel this way because new friends and plenty of fun left no room for sadness. There is a really friendly, welcoming atmosphere here which I love and don’t want to leave” Rebecca – Former Pupil

Health Care

The School Surgery is open from 8.00am to 6.00pm Monday to Friday, and from 8.00am to 5.00pm Saturdays.

The School Health Team consists of three qualified nurses and Medical Officer – a General Practitioner from the Glastonbury Surgery. (A female doctor is available on request). A physiotherapist (private) comes in to School for those children referred by their G.P.

The Medical Officer attends daily, Monday to Friday and a Doctor is always available in case of emergency.

A private local dentist is available for emergency treatment only. A private orthodontist is also available.

In the event of minor illness, boarders are normally nursed in their boarding houses, with full back-up from the medical staff. Close liaison is maintained between houseparents, medical staff and the parents of sick children.
