Life at School
Millfield Preparatory School, founded in 1946, is situated on the slopes of Glastonbury Tor, just four miles from Millfield, and links between the two Schools are close. However, we do feed several other senior independent schools around the country. Above all, we share a commitment to developing the unique talents which we believe each individual processes.
There are nearly 500 boys and girls in School – in more or less equal numbers – aged between seven and thirteen. Every pupil is equally important to us.
Some children exhibit obvious ability in academic, sporting or creative endeavours from an early age; others do not, and may lack confidence as a result. We strive to discover the aptitudes, build the self-esteem and develop the potential of every one of these children. High levels of individual attention are central to achieving this aim, and the School’s excellent staff:pupil ratio of 1:8 with class size of approximately 16 enable our teaching staff to ensure this.
The School provides exceptional facilities: a brand new classroom block, a state of the art I.T. suite, a sports hall, a Language Development Centre, five Science Laboratories, a Design and Technology Centre, 9-hole Golf Course, Indoor Swimming Pool and 29-room Music School complete with Recital Hall are just a selection – and the list continues to grow. With so much on offer, including a choice of around 100 extra-curricular activities, every child can find something at which to excel – and success is a great motivator.
The quality of the staff, facilities and educational methods is reflected in examination results. The School has an excellent record in the Common Entrance examination and many pupils win scholarships to Millfield and to other senior Schools.
The happiness and well-being of our pupils are a high priority. Boarders – who make up about half of pupil numbers – live in five houses, and are looked after by houseparents who create a relaxed and caring family atmosphere for their charges. Everything that is on offer to our boarders is accessible to our day pupils, there is no feeling of segregation. Indeed the house system provides all pupils with security and a sense of belonging from their first day at School to the last.
Millfield is an innovative School which frequently takes the lead in educational development. Our methods are continually evolving, but our primary aim remains constant: to help our pupils to build firm foundations for their future lives. We foster good work habits, self-discipline, confidence and concern for others which will stand them in good stead throughout their education – and well beyond.
“I’ve just recently become a boarder and I really didn’t have much time to practice my music at home but now I’m able to do two practices a day and after school or weekends – it’s much easier now.” Claudia, age 13
“The supportive atmosphere of the School makes you feel really comfortable with School life. When I first came to MPS I thought it would be difficult to settle in, I was promptly proven wrong. The facilities the School offers are great, there is always something to occupy you.” Tom, Former Pupil
“Yes, and they never put you down. I used to find Maths and French really difficult, but they gave me lots of time and help and I’ve improved a lot.” Tabitha, Former Pupil
