Millfield Prep and Pre-Prep School for pupils aged 2-13

Boarding at Millfield Prep A Day in the Life of a Houseparent

Jane Leonard - Houseparent at Berewall

5:15am
Time to get the swimmers up for training. We all look frightful but they are remarkably cheery and chatty over breakfast.

7:00am
The half an hour before heading to school is busy with helping to make beds, reminding about cleaning teeth and a last minute panic trying to find one of the children's missing Maths prep.

The rest of the morning is spent answering the phone, ordering fruit for snacks, making sure there is enough tuck for Wednesday, catching up with emails, sending photos of Olivia at the barbeque to her mum and baking the next birthday cake that needs to look like a fairytale castle.

12:00pm
Lunch at school chatting with the teachers about how our girls are getting on and keeping a watchful eye on them as I walk through the playground.

4:00pm
The girls start to return to house. One challenges me to a game of table football while the others enjoy relaxing in their bedroom or catching up with CBBC.

6:00pm
After supper the girls settle to their prep. The house Matrons come in like the cavalry riding over the hill. Laundry is collected and they help the girls pack their bags ready for the next day. There is much excitement at the birthday party - pizzas and cake!

8:00pm
The bedtime routine begins. A wonderful opportunity to sit on the end of a bed and just chat, have a giggle or read a story to the littlies.

9:00pm
Peace descends on the house. A chance to collect the eggs from our chickens and catch up with Mr Leonard. Before bed I must make final plans for the trip to the beach this weekend. It's been another busy but rewarding day; what will tomorrow bring?
