History

It is our aim to develop the following skills in Years 3 – 5, to find out about people and important events and developments from recent and more distant times; to learn about different aspects of local, British and World History; to discuss why things happen or changed and the results; to carry out investigations using a variety of sources of information and to use their understanding of chronology and historical terms when talking or writing about the past.

Amongst the topics studied are the Aztecs, Greeks, Egyptians, Romans, Anglo Saxons & Tudors. full range of visits is undertaken.

In Year 6 pupils are taught to organise their historical ideas and findings, to ask their own questions, to collect and record information and to present their results using a range of different methods. Pupils study life under the Victorians and during World War II, with a visit to the Fleet Air Arm Museum in the Summer Term.

In Year 7 pupils learn to do the work of the historian and to acquire and assimilate the factual knowledge required to understand the topic being studied. Topics for study include the Norman Conquest, Medieval Church and Castles. Pupils visit Chepstow Castle.

In Year 8 we intend to instill a fascination for History that will enable them to cope with investigations of real historical issues. There is the important task of preparing them for their Entrance Examination. Pupils study the Hundred Years’ War, Plague and Peasants Revolt and Richard III. They take part in a Medieval Day.

The Scholarship Groups will study three monarchs in detail, Edward III, Henry V, Richard III and the Black Death & Peasant’s Revolt. They will prepare for the Townsend – Warner History Prize, which is a general knowledge test of British History.
