Initial Interview and Assessment

Recognising the consequence of failure which may have been experienced in various degrees by those who attend the LDC, the School accepts children based on their potential for growth rather than their current performance.

All children attending the LDC undergo an initial interview and assessment which take into account existing specialist reports, discussions with the parents and with the child; this is then suplemented with a range of assessments tailored to the needs of the individual on joining the school. Typically these will include assesments of strengths and weakness in literacy skills and the identification of barriers to achievement from a wider, more holistic perspective.

Further assessments

If appropriate, the administration of a detailed neuro-developmental delay assessment of the child by the Director of LDC may be discussed with the parents. The Director of the LDC, Mrs Mary Mountstephen, is a qualified specialist in this field. The assessment can establish whether there are any underlying immaturities in the child's development which may be preventing them from making the best of their abilities. Signs of neuro-developmental delay include:

  • Frustrastion
  • Underperformance
  • Academic difficulties
  • Poor concentration and auditory difficulties
  • Emotional difficulties
  • Difficulties with fine and gross motor skills and balance

Options for Intervention

The child may also be finding it difficult to perform daily tasks to their true level of potential, while to all outward appearances there is no sign of this. If this is the case, there are options in terms of intervention. Currently a popular movement programme operates before the school day starts as part of this approach and parents can also be offered 1:1 interventions for their child on a daily basis if this is indicated via the assessments of can be supported to carry out the programme at home. The programme uses very simple movement patterns which the children enjoy doing and which require no special equipment or clothing. The sessions last approximately ten minutes per day and are updated as the child develops competence. Most children will participate in a programme for a maximum period of one year. Parents considering Millfield Preparatory School for their child are invited to contact Mrs. Mountstephen if they would like further information about this programme.
