Academic Educational Support EAL

EAL

On joining Millfield Preparatory School overseas and bilingual children are assessed to ascertain the level of English Language support they need. They are taught in very small groups, or individually, by qualified and experienced specialist English Language teachers who endeavour to meet the specific language needs of each child. The EAL Department currently teaches children from all over the world.

Children who need EAL assistance are fully integrated into the life of Millfield Preparatory School from the very start of their time here. They join a Tutor Group and follow the timetable of the group with the help of an EAL teacher. They live in a Boarding House along with all the other boarders and very quickly form strong international friendships.

Through a variety of resources, including textbooks, EAL reading books, audio cassettes, videos, puzzles, and EAL computer programmes, children are taught the language and grammar that will enable them to access their curriculum subject areas. The traditional skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing are all covered, with emphasis on thinking skills to encourage independent progress. Through classroom discussions the pupils are taught how to express their opinions and ideas in English, giving them the opportunity and confidence to enjoy and succeed in all areas of school life.
